2011 U-Make-It, U-Sail-It raised $7000 for the Windridge Center
On June 11, 2011, the Longview Yacht Club hosted the U-Make-It, U-Sail-It race to benefit the Windridge Equestrian Therapeutic Center of East Texas. This year's event raised $7000 - up almost $2000 from last year's event. A great time was had by all. Check out the pictures below to get some ideas for next year's event in June 2012! |
Updates on Events
Spring Club Races: On May 7th under threat of strong winds and
high velocity gusts, 4 boats gallantly set out for the Spring Club
races. Mark Miller was forced to retire at the end of the first lap of
the first race because of lack of boat speed. His main sail was put out
of its misery on the first windward leg. Hindsight suggests that this
was probably a blessing to this poor old thing, thought to be the
original mainsail on this fun Hunter 26. After experimentation with a
larger headsail with very limited success, it was decided that
retirement was the decent thing to do to avoid delaying the other boats.
The 2 race series was won by Ralph Zelenoch on the maiden voyage of his
seriously upgraded and refurbished C&C 29. David Grotheim came in
second after a good day without breaking anything. Mike Murphy came in
third on his pristine Catalina 25. The winds were a lot lower than
predicted. Winds 8-12 with some gusts, brilliant sunshine and warm
temperatures combined for a near perfect day of racing. The conditions,
while just short of boisterous, gave everyone a good workout. Margaret
Grotheim finished off the racing with a lasagna dinner complete with
home-made bread and several deserts. Yum. 2011 Memorial Regatta: On May 21st, again confronted with strong gusting winds the race committee laid out an excellent long triangular course for two races. Absent a committee boat, James handled the start from the big Beneteau. After what seemed like a long day and a lot of heavy lifting, four boats survived. Mike Denholm took first place, David Grotheim second and James White third. A great day was rounded out with a sumptuous repast provided by members. Yum again. The more senior participants found it necessary to retire from the socializing soon after. The Blessing of the Fleet was a roaring success with several Shreveport Power Squadron members attending. Once again the wind was fairly high and gusting in the 20 plus range. The wreath in memory of members who have passed, was cast out from the end of the pier instead of out in the main lake because of the weather. In spite of that, everyone had a good time and all boats were blessed. Later on, the wind eased some and several members went for a very pleasant sail. Workday: We got most of what we had scheduled done on work day. About all we have to do for the time being is finish the water hose bib connections and stanchions. Good job everyone! |
